Just a few seconds after Remake finishes, Cloud Strife and their companions seek refuge in the charming village of Kalm to reminisce over their past with Tifa and Sephiroth. As Sephiroth murders everyone in sight and discovers his actual fate at the hands of Shinra and Jenova, we watch as his hometown burns to the ground.

However, when all of these scenes come to pass, their veracity will be questioned, as though everything that happened in the first game and the individuals who experienced them had somehow altered. Rebirth often subverts our assumptions by using set pieces, people, and settings that appear familiar on the surface but have a lot more depth. Nothing is as it seems. The most amazing thing about Square Enix’s rebirth of these ancient roots is how it has incorporated narrative and storyline into a strangely constrained open world where each small quest and discovery is worthwhile pursuing.

There are six areas outside of Midgar. They range from lush rainforests, where flora has overtaken the remnants of a capitalist past of avarice, to deserts, where Mako has been drained from the earth. Each game offers a plethora of side missions and bustling cities to investigate, in addition to a broad range of extracurricular activities and hidden objectives, from quick-time events that are exciting but short-lived to extremely difficult boss fights.

Additionally, there are notorious towers to scale, which will result in symbols all over your map; however, we will only ever have to deal with two or three of these at any given moment. The diversions in Rebirth are tempting rather than overpowering. You are given a reason to stray from the well-trod route beyond experience grinding to defeat difficult enemies, along with extra backstory and plentiful prizes for exploring the map’s fringes.
